In arabic a word is called ‫ة‬‫م‬َ ِ‫كَل‬ (Kalima). The plural is Kalimat. Arabic words can be divided into three types:

  1. Ism (noun) - a person or a things
    • Ismun, (Asma’un)
    • Nouns usually have
      • Alif & Lam (at the beginning)
      • Tanween (at the end)
  2. Fi’l (verb) - an action
    • fi’lun (af aalun)
    • Verbs come in one of the following patterns:
      • fataha, yaftahu, iftah
  3. Harf (particle) - a joining word, usually a one- or two-letter word (90% of the time)
    • harf, (huruf)
