Najasa (impurity)) is categorised into two main types: i. Najasa Hukmiya (De Jure Filth - Ruled to be filth) and ii. Najasa Haqeeqi (De Facto Filth - Real filth)

  1. Najasa Hukmiya (De Jure Filth - Rules to be filth) is legal impurity, referring to a ritual state.

    Definition: It is the ritual state of a person that prevents them from performing certain acts of worship, such a salat, until they undergo purification

    two types:

    1. Hadath asghar (minor De Jure Filth) - a state where person needs wudu (ablution) to perform acts.
      • in this state salat is not allowed, but oral recitation of the Qur’an is allowed.
    2. Hadath akbar (major De Jure Filth) - a state requiring ghusl (ritual bath)
      • neither salat or recitation is allowed
  2. Najasah haqeeqi (De Facto Filth - Real filth) is actual filth, referring to tangible substances that are inherently impure

    Definition: It is a solid or liquid substance that one must avoid or remove if it gets on their body or clothing to ensure their prayer is valid.

    Two types:

    1. Ghaleezah (Severe/Heavy Filth)
      • It is only excused if the amount is smaller than or equal to the size of a dirham
    2. Khafifah (Mild/Light Filth)
      • It is generally excused if it covers less than one-fourth of the affected garment or limb.
