1. Khadijah bint Khuwaylid
    • Established in the two sahihs that she is unconditionally the best woman of her time
    • The Prophet ﷺ desired to marry her for her honour and nobility amongst her tribe and peers (she was a widow and she was forty)
    • He ﷺ lived with her as his sole wife for twenty-five years until she passed away when he was fifty, never seeking another wife during her lifetime despite the customs of the time
  2. Sawdah bint Zamah
    • After Khadijah he married Sawdah, as she grew old he was going to divorce her, where upon she gifted her day to Aisha and said ‘I have no need for men: however, I want to be resurrected as one of your wives’
    • She was his ﷺ sole wife for three year
    • She passed away in the Year 55 after hijra
  3. Aisha bint Abi Bakr
    • He ﷺ married her in makkah two years before the Hijra, when she was 6 or seven year old
    • He consumated the marriage in Madina when she was 9 years old
    • He ﷺ passed away she was 18 years old
    • She passed away in the year 58 after hijra (and it has been said otherwise)
    • She was the only virgin that the he ﷺ married
    • She was given the kunya Umm Abd-Allah
  4. Hafsah bint Umar ibn al-Khattab
    • it is related that He ﷺ divorced her whereuponn Jibril descened with Allah’s orders to traje her back because she profusely fasts and prays (in another narration out of mercy for Umar)
    • She passed away in the year 45 hijri (and it has been said otherwise)
  5. Umm Habibah bint Abi Sufyan
    • married her whilst she was in Abyssinia. al- Najashi gave four hundred dirhams on his behalf as dowry, and Usman in Affan conducted the marriage contract
    • She passed away in the Year forty-four after Hijri
  6. Umm Salamah Hind bint Umayyah
    • passed away in the year sixty-two
    • reported to be the last wife to pass away (although Maymunah was the last)
  7. Zaynab bint Jash
    • passed away in madina in year 20. She was the first of them to pass away after him, and the first to be carried on a bier (wooden frame - honor during her funeral rites)
  8. Juwayrah bint al-Harith
    • captured during rhe expedition of Bani al-mustalaq
    • he ﷺ then freed her and married her
    • She passed away in the year 56
  9. Maymunah bint al-Harith
    • the maternal aunt of Khalid bin Walid and Abd-Allah bin Abbas
    • the last woman he ﷺ married
    • passed away in the year 51 (also reported as 66)
  10. Safiyyah bint Huyayy ibn Akhtab
    • she was from the progeny of Harun (AS) She was captured in Khaybar, he ﷺ free fer and nmade her emancipation her dowry
    • She pass away in the year 50
  11. Zaynab bint Khuzayma ‘the mother of the destitute’
    • maried her three years after the migration
    • she lived with him ﷺ for tw oor three months before she passed away

These are the women that have been definitely established to has lived with him ﷺ and who he consummated marriage. Their graves are well known in al-Baqi, with the exception of Lady Khadijah (buried in al-Hajun Makka) and Lady Maymunah (buried in Wadi Sarif, close to Makka).

  1. Fatimah bint al-Dahhak
    • whom he gave the option (for divorce) when the verse was revealed giving his wives the option, she chose this world.
    • she would be seen picking up camel droppings (possibly indicating the lowly impoverished state) and saying ‘I am the wretched one who chose this world’
  2. Sharaf, the sister of Dihyah al-kalbi
    • (divorced before consummation)
  3. Khawlah bint al-Hudhayl
    • she was called Bint Hakim or Umm Sharik,the one that gave herself away to him ﷺ
    • divorced before consummation
  4. Asma bint Ka’b al-Juwayniyyah
    • divorced before consummation

13-15 - it is not confirmed whether he actually married these three women or if he “merely intended to propose to them, but declined

  1. He ﷺ also married a woman from Ghifar, in whom he ﷺ saw whites patches (vitiligo) so he sent her back to her family
  2. Umaymah
    • who as he entered said ‘I take refuge in Allah from you, to which he ﷺ replied May Allah protect the one seeking refuge in Him; stay with your family’
  3. Aliyah bint Zabyan
    • whom he ﷺ divorced when she entered his presence
  4. Bint al-Salt
    • passed away before consumation
  5. Malikah al-Laythiyah
    • some have said it was she who said she sought refuge so he ﷺ released her

He ﷺ also asked for the hand of a woman from her father. who described her in the following words ‘I will tell you more, she has never fallen ill’, to which the Prophet ﷺ replied ‘there is no good in this woman in Allah’s sight’ and so she left.
