Whilst tayammum has been established from the Qur’an and sunnah, the wiping over the khuff has been established in the sunnah, the Ijma of the jurists, and reported by more than 80 of the companions.

The khuff is usually made of leather but it is permissible for other materials that meet certain conditions.

Evidence from the shariah

The shariah has permitted the wiping over in place of washing the feet during ablution as a convenience.

  • ‘… Allah intends ease for you, not hardship,…’ Qur’an (2:185)
  • ‘… The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) stipulated (the upper limit) of three days and three nights for a traveller and one day and one night for the resident.’ Hadith Sahih Muslim (276a).
