The meaning of salah:

  • literal definition of salah is - supplicating for good (i.e. prayer)
  • technical definition - name given to a collection of acts that begin with saying Allahu Akbar ( takbir) and end with Assalamu alikum wa rahmatullah ( tasleem).

Proofs of legality

  • Qur’an: Take due care of all the prayers, and the middle prayer, and stand before Alläh in total devotion
  • Hadith: Parable of the one who has access to a river, this is like the five daily prayers by which Allah obliterates sins

Types of salah

  1. Involves bowing and prostrating
    1. Obligatory. For e.g. Five daily salahs, make up of any of the five daily prayers, funeral prayer (community obligation)
    2. Compulsory (Wajib) - necessary.
      • For e.g. Witr, two Ids, delayed performance of a nawafil prayer after having starting it, two salahs after tawaf (circumlocution), Salat al-Nazr (vowing a voluntary (nafl)), sajad tilawat
    3. Supererogatory (Nawafil) - Salahs other than the obligatory and compulsory/necessary prayers.
  2. Salah without bowing and prostration for e.g. (Janazah)

Who is Salah is obligatory on?

  • Muslim
  • Maturity (parents should instruct them to perform salah and discipline (showing discontent) them to perform salah from their 11 lunar years so they get used to performing the 5 daily prayers before it becomes obligatory on them)
  • Sanity
