Birth date

He (ﷺ) was born on a Monday, in the month of Rabi al-Awaal in the year of the elephant (570 CE). The 2nd, 8th, 9th and 12th of the month have all been narrated. The 12th is the most popular opinion amongst the majority of scholars.

Monday, a blessed day

Monday is considered to be a blessed day, as Imam Ahmed said,

“The Prophet ﷺ was born on a Monday, commissioned with prophethood on a Monday, passed away on a Monday, left as a migrant from Makkah to Madina on a Monday, arrived in Madina on a Monday and raised the Blackstone on a Monday.”

His mother’s pregnancy

His (ﷺ) mother has an extraordinary pregnancy, not experiencing any heaviness or cravings for certain foods.

He ﷺ was born circumcised (although it has been narrated that his grandfather circumcised him on the 7th day) and cheerful, with his index finger pointing upwards and the rest of his fingers clinched, like tasbih.

There is a difference in terms of how long the pregnancy was as some say 9 months whilst others have reported as 6 months.

Extraordinary incidents and strange phenomena

On the night of ﷺ birth the following incidents and phenomena have been reported:

  • idols falling from their places on their faces
  • light emerging with him as he was born, such that the palaces of Sham were illuminated
  • the palace of Chosroes trembled and it’s balconies collapsed
  • the extinguishing of the Persian fire, which has been burning continuously for a thousand years
  • the lake of Sawah drying up.
